Peter Worthington-Smith Award

Organized by the Southern African Refrigerated Distribution Association (SARDA), a GCCA Affiliate Partner, the Peter Worthington-Smith Award recognizes outstanding young professionals in the African cold storage industry.

This award commemorates Peter Worthington-Smith, a major innovator in the South African refrigeration industry who passed away in 2011. Peter was a driving force behind the introduction of new technologies including controlled atmosphere storage, cold steri for citrus, mobile racking, the pumper drum system for liquid ammonia and spray hydro cooling in the wine industry.

Ivan_Sutic_Peter_Worthington_Smith_Award_2015Ivan Sutic is the first recipient of the Peter Worthington-Smith Award in recognition of exceptional achievement by a young person in the South African cold chain. Sutic has been the Financial Director at Chilleweni Cold Storage, his family-run business located in Alberton, South Africa, since 2012.

While he has family ties to the cold storage industry, Sutic initially planned for a career in the financial sector. Application Details

The Peter Worthington-Smith Award is open to all employees of cold and freezer stores in Africa who meet the following requirements:

  1. Are under 35 on 1st April 2015.
  2. Have worked within the Cold Storage Industry for more than 3 years.
  3. Have insight of their company’s strategic plan.
  4.  Have a broad knowledge of the African cold storage industry.
  5. Their cold store has a pallet capacity of 500 pallets or more.

Initially entrants will be judged on the basis of written applications. The relevant forms can be obtained from the SARDA offices in Cape Town or by emailing John Ackermann on or on 021 551 5076. Finalists will be brought to Cape Town in late November 2014 for the final judging.

The winner will attend the IARW-WFLO Convention & Expo, held in April and will make a presentation to the 700+ delegates. Guided tours to cold storage facilities in Florida will be arranged and the winner will attend the Convention activities. As winning the Worthington Smith Award will be a wonderful experience for anyone in the cold store industry, managers are encouraged to enter employees who meet the criteria.
