Education and Networking Highlight Global Cold Chain Expo Opening Day

The Global Cold Chain Expo kicked off on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois with a day filled with education and networking.

The day opened with a widely-attended General Session, where keynote speaker Chalmers Carr, President & CEO of Titan Farms shared details on Titan’s endeavor into manufacturing frozen peach products as well as provided insight into their decision to invest in building their own specialized temperature-controlled peach processing and warehousing facilities.

Carr oversees operations for Titan Farms from the daily packing of peaches to laying plastic in the vegetable field. As the largest peach grower on the east coast of the United States, Titan Farms has over 5,800 acres of peaches in production.

Following the General Session, attendees learned best practices in cold chain operations and logistics during focused education sessions based on the following four tracks: Transportation, HR/Legal, Engineering, and Cold Chain Solutions.

The Cold Chain Solutions track explored exciting IoT solutions currently on the market and how these technologies will help drive solutions to cold chain problems; key drivers towards the high cost of food facilities, and various delivery methods for a facility considering impacts on cost and schedule; and more.

The Engineering track covered methods in which an operation can accomplish short order lead times, perfect product quality, low TCO, as well as employee satisfaction; energy efficiency; and new technologies in fire protection.

In the HR/Legal track, attendees took a look at several best practices for recruiting and retaining warehouse talent; steps to remaining union-free; and lessons learned from warehouse legal cases and issues.

Lastly, the Transportation track dove into refrigerated truck market capacity; FSMA compliance, as well as how the Internet is poised to have a major impact on how perishables are monitored in the supply chain.

Following the education sessions, attendees headed to the Shedd Aquarium for the United Fresh and Global Cold Chain Opening Party to catch up with friends and peers while making new industry connections.
