In August of 2017, PLM Trailer Leasing Vice President of Customer Solutions and member of the International Refrigerated Transportation Association (IRTA), a Core Partner of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), Board of Directors, Don Durm travelled to Lagos, Nigeria to work with two Business-to-Business (B2B) matches for the Nigeria Postharvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN), a project that GCCA has planned with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) since 2015, project over a two-week period.
Since 2011, the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) has supported cold storage in Uzbekistan. The country has witnessed substantial growth in refrigerated warehouse capacity from only 258,000 cubic meters in 2010 to 3.5 million cubic meters in 2016. Horticulture exports jumped in 2016 alone by 38 percent, to more than 800,000 tons of fruit and vegetables.
Since 2016, the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) has partnered with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to provide technical assistance to cold storage companies in Nigeria. The interest and support from GCCA membership has already resulted in four companies receiving guidance and advice from GCCA members with two more planned for September.
In 2016, the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) completed a cold chain assessment in Liberia for a project that is supporting agribusiness development. Our partners on this project, Cultivating New Frontiers in Africa (CNFA), have followed up on several of the recommendations, including providing postharvest training and most recently, examining the feasibility of setting up a Postharvest Technology Service Center (PTSC) in the country.
In collaboration with the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP), GCCA hosted the third of four Cold Chain Executive Connections (CCEC) as part of the larger USTDA Cold Chain Standards Project. Held in Shanghai on July 19, the event brought over 50 Chinese cold chain professionals together for a best practices workshop and networking event.
