The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has begun discussions to address the rising number of food recalls relating to undeclared allergens. FSIS held a public meeting on March 16, 2017, at which GCCA representatives were able to participate in the dialogue between government, industry, and research leaders, learning about what GCCA members can be doing to improve their activities, reducing industry-wide allergen recalls. A recent submission to the Global Cold Chain Alliance’s (GCCA) Inquiry Service involved gathering information on required certification for facilities that temper boxed organic meats. GCCA Vice President of Government and Legal Affairs Lowell Randel, reached out to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and formulated a response. See the full correspondence below.
Q: Would our facility be required to become USDA organic certified in order to temper products for a customer that would send us boxed organic meat? BRC Global Standards has released the draft of their new storage and distribution standard. The BRC Global Standards team, along with a wide range of stakeholders, review each of its Standards periodically. As part of this review, BRC invites all companies that are certificated or affected by the Standard to review the proposed draft and provide feedback. GCCA has been working closely with BRC on the latest draft Standard with members of the GCCA Supply Chain Operations Committee serving on an BRC advisory council. On January 1, 2016 the World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO) will officially welcome a new member to its prestigious Scientific Advisory Council. In October, the WFLO Board of Directors voted to confirm the nomination of Dr. Faris Karim Hussain of Kansas State University. Dr. Karim will be sharing expertise on ammonia contamination, and food toxicology. Continue reading
