How Big is the Truck Driver Shortage Problem?

The problem, however, is not just driver shortage. Many companies are finding it difficult to grow their fleets due to a lack of qualified drivers and high turnover rates in the first 90 days. With the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s new CSA challenges at hand, a driver’s record is an even more critical piece of the hiring process. Bob Costello, Chief Economist – American Trucking Associations (ATA), and Elisabeth Barna, Senior Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs – ATA, spoke about this topic in their presentation Taking Action: Driver Shortage at the AOC Symposium, held on July 27, 2014 in Washington, DC, as part of the GCCA Assembly of Committees. Intermodal Growth Significant in North America

According to a recent article in Food Logistics magazine, intermodal growth has grown significantly in North America. In fact, the pace “in the second quarter more than tripled from the prior quarter.” The Journal of Commerce attributes this to the “movement of backlogged cargo from a severe winter, U.S. manufacturing growth and a surge of imports ahead of the expiration of the U.S. West Coast longshore contract.” MORE

Richard Tracy, Vice President of International Programs, visited La Paz, Bolivia, to explore the cold chain. Here, he examines avocados which had been shipped four hours in an unrefrigerated truck, to be sold at an open-air market in high temperatures.
