The Global Cold Chain Alliance developed the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Compliance Guide to help cold storage operators understand major FSMA requirements.
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), signed into law in January 2011, represents the first major changes to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) food safety authorities in over 70 years.  The legislation was driven by the occurrence of several high profile food recalls that resulted in significant numbers of illnesses and some fatalities.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 48 million people (1 in 6 Americans) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from food borne diseases. FSMA is designed to enable FDA to better protect public health by strengthening the food safety system.
