Some IARW member PRW’s have recently experienced AIB inspections that have, among other initiatives, dealt with allergen cross contamination prevention. As a result of member inquiries, IARW-WFLO sent out a bulletin yesterday that was designed to provide guidelines to address allergen cross contamination concerns.  Several very good follow-up questions were generated from members that warranted deeper explanation: Read the supplemental information here.

The email message dated 18 August 2009 from Bill Hudson will be followed up by interaction between IARW-WFLO and AIB to address allergen cross contamination control in storage environments.

You’ve probably heard a lot about automation. As one of the cold storage industry’s hottest trends, automation has been the subject of countless meetings and articles focusing on the benefits of this new technology. However, building an automated system can prove a daunting and costly task, especially if you are attempting it for the first time. For the last several years, IARW Chairman Larry Laurin and his company Conestoga Cold Storage Ltd. in Canada have designed, fabricated and installed automated systems at several of their facilities. They’ve seen it all. In a special session at the 2009 IACSC Conference & Expo, 5-8 November 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Laurin will walk you through a technical case study and offer up some of the engineering challenges his company faced during their projects. You do not want to miss this event, if you are building or considering building an automated facility.

Romania has grown into a market that has generated a tremendous amount of interest and seems on the brink of showing the world great potential. The country’s rising income and improved market access have resulted in increased consumption and a growing middle class that is more conscious of food quality. To satisfy these consumer demands, an efficient and reliable cold chain and supporting infrastructure is required. The Cold Chain Logistics Education Program & Trade Show, Bucharest, 21-22 September, is a unique occasion to explore business opportunities.

The program offers presentations on technology, refrigeration, and energy efficiency as well as contributions from regional and international experts on current and future market developments. The conference is focused on creating and expanding reliable and efficient regional cold supply chains. This event is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the logistic opportunities in this region and to network with local and international colleagues.

Zero Mountain and Arkansas Refrigerated Services in Arkansas, USA recently hosted GCCA President and CEO Bill Hudson and GCCA Vice President Corey Rosenbusch. Hudson and Rosenbusch paid a visit to the members as part of a strategic initiative aimed at increasing member participation and delivering GCCA resources to member facilities.

During the Zero Mountain meeting, facility employees participated in a conference call with GCCA Director of Government Affairs, Lowell Randel, who provided an update on legislative and regulatory matters affecting the industry. GCCA’s Government Affairs program offers a tremendous resource to the association by offering firsthand knowledge of legislative and regulatory issues. Central to the discussion was WFLO’s support of recognizing blast freezing as processing, as in the case of Zero Mountain which was able to receive Arkansas state tax credits for their blast freezing business. Zero Mountain, named for their original limestone mine freezer located in Johnson, Arkansas, USA, operates over 30 million cubic feet of temperature control storage in Arkansas, USA including the original mountain cave. Learn more about Zero Mountain here.

Arkansas Refrigerated Services, under the new leadership of President Mike Group, is a 3,600,000 cubic feet facility working primarily in the poultry industry. Group operates 5 buildings at the same location that is unique in that approximately 14% of the total space is dedicated to blast freezing. Arkansas Refrigerated Services has a total of 16 blast cells in 4 buildings. Learn more about Arkansas Refrigerated Services here.
