Automation in PRWs is a major focus of the 29th Annual International Association for Cold Storage and Construction (IACSC) Conference and Expo, to be held 5-8 November 2009 at the Ritz Carlton in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. There will be two in-depth case studies on automation systems installed in major refrigerated warehouses, one of which will be presented by IARW Chairman Larry Laurin. Plus, there will be an additional session demonstrating how automation can achieve a smaller building footprint and reduce operational costs. This is just a sampling of the programming at this year’s IACSC Conference and Expo – the year’s only event focusing on cold storage construction and engineering. Special offer: refrigerated warehouse operators can attend the event for $300! For more information and to register, visit www.iacsc.org/iacsc09.

The Chinese cold chain market is set for exponential growth. According to real estate services provider Jones Lang LaSalle, “China's market for refrigerated warehouses is expected to grow by about 24 percent for each of the next five years amid a thriving consumer market and food-export sector.” See full story.

This October, GCCA will be tapping into China’s market potential with a series of cold chain seminars sponsored by the United States Trade Development Agency (USTDA). Over the course of three days (19-23 October 2009), Chinese refrigerated warehouse operators will learn the latest in refrigeration warehousing and transportation technologies and best practices in three different cities: Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou. Up to 200 people are expected at each “China Cold Chain Best Practices” seminar. GCCA is inviting U.S. Associate Members to sponsor these seminars. Sponsor benefits can include table top displays, signage at the event, a post-event attendees list, and special discounts on advertising in COLD FACTS magazine. WFLO has teamed up with The Georgia Institute of Technology to conduct a benchmarking research project. The current phase of this project is to collect data from member cold storage facilities, ideally 60 facilities. The goal of our research is to answer two questions: How productive should you be (in an existing facility)? How productive should you expect to be (in a planned facility)? To move forward, a survey will be distributed to members in early October 2009. Participation is voluntary and all participating organizations will remain anonymous.

Participating facilities will receive a score report showing them where they stack up against the other participants. Data contained in these reports will be anonymous. Please contact Colleen Caster at ccaster@gcca.org if your facility is interested in participating.

This year’s IARW North American Chapter Meetings are truly embodying the 2009-2010 theme “Standing Strong – Shaping the Future” with strong programming and attendance. Refrigerated warehouse operators all across North America are flocking in record numbers to Chapter Meetings to take advantage of programming that addresses the key issues impacting their region.

Last week, the IARW Heartland Chapter concluded a very successful meeting in Chicago, Illinois, USA with record-breaking attendance. The high turn-out was partially a result of a strong educational program, which included in-depth sessions on business continuity planning, theft prevention, and warehouse liens. One of the most popular presentations was from IARW’s own Chairman, Larry Laurin, detailing his company’s achievements in automation technology. “This is the best program we’ve ever had in the history of this event,” said IARW Heartland Chairman Jeff Hartman. Each 2009 IARW North American Chapter Meeting is packed with information that will help you and your company prepare for 2010. There are only a few Chapter Meetings left. Find out why you don’t want to miss your 2009 North American Chapter Meeting.

Q: The chemical of concern is d-limonene, I need to know if there is an established industry standard that makes it acceptable to store other commodities without the risk of odor transfer. We have a cooler that was used for storing citrus, after thoroughly cleaning the room we are getting readings of 38 ppb of d-limonene in our air sampling tests, we have a new customer interested in the space who would like to store tubs of margarine. They are reluctant to do so due to the previous occupant and the possibility of odor transfer. If we could show them our sample readings are below a standard for the industry it may ease their concerns on storing product in this cooler.

A: Don Schlimme, WFLO Scientific Advisor responds: It is unlikely that  any specific industry standard could be found for an acceptable threshold of d-limonene. The important thing to be concerned with here is "can a limonene odor be detected with the human nose" in the space? If so, then the odor will transfer to poorly packaged, high lipid foods that are placed in the space regardless of the quantity of limonene present in the space. Apparently, the limonene odor lingers in this space even after substantial ventilation/cleaning. The best way that one can rid the limonene odor from the space is to circulate the air in the space through an activated carbon filter until all the limonene is removed. Read more.
