The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a United Nations agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was amended in 2016 to require that a packed container’s gross weight must be verified before being loaded onto a ship. The revision was enacted in response to concerns about the safety of containers that may have inaccurate declared weights. 162 countries, including the United States, are parties to the convention and are subject to its requirements.
In response to the rules, GCCA developed a guide for industry to help cold storage operators understand SOLAS requirements.
