Chairman Thompson Highlights Importance of Trade and Farm Bill

House Agriculture Committee Chairman GT Thompson (R-PA) and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) authored a joint op-ed that discusses the critical role of American agriculture in the U.S. economy and the challenges faced in global markets. They emphasize the importance of foreign market development and highlight the negative impact of the growing trade deficit on U.S. companies.
Chairman Thompson and Chairman Smith argue that after decades of leading in agricultural exports, American farmers are now encountering significant trade barriers and increased costs, which hinder their ability to sell goods overseas. The 2024 Farm Bill, named the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024, aims to address these issues by opening new markets for American agricultural products. The bill proposes doubling the funding for the Market Access Program and the Foreign Market Development program, which would help American producers counteract the current administration’s trade policies and gain access to new markets. The House bill also includes the GCCA championed FRIDGE Act, which would support cold chain development in emerging markets.
The article points out the alarming agricultural trade deficit, which reached $21 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $30.5 billion. This deficit is attributed to poor economic conditions, rising costs for American farmers, and global trade barriers. The proposed Farm Bill seeks to reverse this trend by enhancing trade promotion programs and ensuring fair treatment of U.S. agricultural exports through the Generalized System of Preferences program
