NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo has tabled Private Members’ Bill C-360 entitled “An Act to establish a national strategy to reduce the amount of wasted food in Canada.” The bill includes a call to:
Facilitate the donation of food products that are fit for human consumption to community organizations and food banks; and
Encourage private sector actors to play a leadership role in reducing the amount of food that is wasted, including by contributing to covering the cost of strategies to manage wasted food.
The bill will likely see debate next year, but has to clear a number of legislative hurdles before it has a chance to become law. GCCA will continue to monitor its progress and engage in committee testimony should the bill reach that stage.
