The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) summit was held this September in New York. SDG is a global plan of action to drive economic prosperity and social well-being while protecting the environment. One of the areas emphasized in the 2030 Agenda is the building of resilient and sustainable food systems. The US has been a core leader on this initiative, at home and abroad, and has obligated $15.2 billion in emergency food aid and development to the current global security crisis. The core US program to fight food insecurity is the USDAID’s Feed the Future initiative. Feed the Future is increasing its international footprint through targeting 20 more countries to help facilitate and build resilient food systems. The initiative focusses on helping local farmers get goods to market faster, receive higher-quality agricultural data, and provide drought and heat resistant seeds to farmers. McGovern-Dole is another core US program, which strengthens global food security through short- and long-term commodity donations to assistive in local agriculture projects. The US through its initiatives, public-private partnerships, and international alliances is committed to increasing food security throughout the globe.
