Longshoremen from the Port of Los Angeles to Oakland have recently instituted work actions in response to a lack of progress in ongoing labor negotiations. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (IWLU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) have been in active negotiations for the past year.  During the last several months, port operations have continued normally despite not having a new labor agreement in place. In April, the parties reached tentative agreement on some areas, including automation, but several key issues, including compensation, have yet to be resolved.  In March 2023, GCCA joined over 200 organizations in calling on President Biden to engage with both parties to facilitate an agreement. GCCA will continue to work with industry partners to reinforce the importance of reaching an agreement and maintaining operations.
