FDA Names Deputy Commissioner for New Unified Human Foods Program

The FDA has selected James “Jim” Jones to serve as the first Deputy Commissioner for their new Human Foods Program (HFP) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The HFP is the result of FDA’s efforts to reorganize its programs and offices regulating human foods. The new program will oversee food safety, chemical safety, and all innovations surrounding food products and agricultural technologies. Jones was a member of the Reagan-Udall Foundation’s Expert Panel tasked with evaluating FDA’s food programs. He co-authored an integral report in 2022 recommending FDA restructuring. This experience gives Jones a strong understanding of the FDA’s food programs and opportunities to improve their effectiveness. Previously, Jones has held multiple positions at the EPA, in which he led initiatives on reducing chemical pollution in the US food chain supply. Most notably was his leadership in the overhaul of the Toxic Substances Control Act in 2016. FDA commissioner Robert M. Califf said “I’m delighted to welcome Jim to the FDA. His impressive career, extensive leadership experience, and passionate vision for the future of the Human Foods Program make him an ideal selection for this pivotal position”.
