Cold Chain Opportunities in Senegal, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire

In October and November, Global Cold Chain Foundation (GCCF) teams traveled to Senegal, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire. Led by GCCA Vice President of International Projects Amanda Brondy, teams comprised of cold storage operations, development and construction experts delivered consultations to private sector businesses in each country. In addition, the teams met with government ministries and departments to advise on cold chain development opportunities.
Finance for cold chain investments remains a challenge across all three countries. While there is growing interest amongst producers, importers and exporters for cold storage, the understanding and acceptance of a third-party logistics business model is not widely acknowledged. This does not necessarily hinder the growth of the cold chain, but it does mean that retailers, producers, and processors are left to develop their own refrigerated logistics, a capital-intensive process that pulls them away from their core business.
There is enormous need for cold chain training in the region across a variety of areas including refrigeration and equipment maintenance, and cold storage operations. West Africa provides exciting opportunities for future growth for GCCA’s Africa Region.
