FDA Food Facility Registration Renewal due December 31

This is a reminder that food facility registration is due for renewal by December 31, 2020. This applies to all US food facilities and any international facilities that export food to the US.

Section 415 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) requires food facilities required to register with FDA to renew such registrations by December 31 of each even-numbered year. The owner, operator, or agent in charge of the facility, or a person authorized by one of them, can submit a facility's registration renewal electronically on the FDA website. Please note that you must first create or have an existing FURLS account to access the module and submit your renewal. There is no fee for registration or renewal.

In accordance with 21 CFR 1.232(a)(2), effective October 1, 2020, all facilities must include a unique facility identifier (UFI) recognized as acceptable by FDA with their registration. To date, FDA recognizes the Data Universal Numbering System D-U-N-S (DUNS) number as an acceptable UFI. DUNS numbers are assigned and managed by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) and can be obtained or verified by visiting D&B’s website or by phone at 866-705-5711. You will be required to provide your UFI in Section 2- Facility Name/Address Information of your registration.

While the FDA expects all registrants to provide their DUNS number with their renewal submission before December 31, 2020, the Agency recognizes that there may be a delay in obtaining a DUNS number. If you are unable to obtain a DUNS number prior to the end of the renewal period, you may enter “PENDING” in the UFI field of your registration and will then have 90 days to obtain and update your registration with a DUNS number. Failure to update the registration with a valid DUNS number will result in cancellation of the registration.

FDA will consider a registration for a food facility to be expired if the registration is not renewed as required. The FDA will consider a food facility with an expired registration as having failed to meet their registration requirements, which is prohibited under the FD&C Act. The FDA will cancel a facility’s registration if it has failed to renew as required.

Please visit the Food Facilities Registration page for more information about food facility registration and the 2020 biennial renewal including guidance documents and user guides for our Food Facility Registration Module (FFRM).

Also, if you have submitted a qualified facility attestation before October 1, 2020, you must re-submit your attestation before December 31, 2020. Please re-submit your attestation electronically via the Qualified Facility Attestation Module also on the FDA website. Ensure that your registration is renewed before re-submitting your qualified facility attestation.

Please contact the FDA Industry Systems Help Desk at, toll-free in the USA 1-800-216-7331, or 240-247-8804 if you require additional assistance.
