House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Holds Hearing over Department of Transportation’s Regulatory Agenda
The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit held a hearing on Wednesday, July 24, to examine the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) regulatory and administrative agenda. Witnesses included William “Lewie” Pugh, Executive Vice President of Owner-Operator Independent Driver’s Association; Beth Osborne, Director of Transportation for America; Tim Duit, President of Duit Construction Company; and Philip Bell, President of Steel Manufacturers Association.
Lewie Pugh, Executive Vice President of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, discussed the impact of regulatory policies on independent truck drivers. He highlighted the need for more flexible regulations that take into account the unique challenges faced by small operators in the trucking industry. Pugh’s remarks pointed to the importance of regulatory reforms that balance safety with operational feasibility.
Beth Osborne, Director of Transportation for America, spoke on the necessity of sustainable transportation solutions. She called for increased federal support for local transportation initiatives, emphasizing the role of such investments in promoting environmental sustainability and improving public transit systems. Osborne stressed the need for a forward-looking approach to transportation policy.
Philip Bell, President of the Steel Manufacturers Association, underscored the critical role of steel manufacturing in national infrastructure projects. He underscored the need for policies that support the industry, enabling it to contribute effectively to the country’s infrastructure development. Bell highlighted the importance of stable and predictable regulatory frameworks to maintain the competitiveness of American steel manufacturers.
Tim Duit, President of Duit Construction Co., Inc., shed light on the challenges faced by construction companies due to existing regulatory requirements. He advocated for streamlining these processes to enhance efficiency and reduce unnecessary burdens on businesses. Duit’s insights were particularly focused on the practical implications of regulations on day-to-day operations within the construction sector.
The committee acknowledged the need for reforms to streamline the regulatory process, making them more efficient and less burdensome for businesses, including revisiting existing regulations and ensuring they align with current industry needs. They emphasized the importance of infrastructure investment to drive economic growth and increase public safety.
