As previously reported in the Washington Weekly, on July 13th, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) launched a new National Emphasis Program (NEP) focused on warehouses and distribution facilities. OSHA developed the program in response to higher-than-average DART rates for warehousing and distribution industry codes. Inspections under the NEP are scheduled to being in October 2023 and will be comprehensive safety inspections covering a wide variety of hazards including powered industrial vehicle operations, material handling/storage, walking-working surfaces, means of egress, and fire protection.

Inspectors have also been instructed to address ergonomics and heat hazards through the NEP. On August 10th, GCCA staff and members of the Government Affairs Committee met with OSHA to learn more about the NEP. A copy of the OSHA presentation that provides additional details on the NEP is available by clicking here. GCCA members are encouraged to review their occupational safety programs in preparation for potential NEP inspections
