GCCA Joins Coalition Letters Urging Resolution to Rail Labor Dispute

GCCA has recently joined a coalition effort encouraging President Biden and key government agencies to continue working with rail carriers and unions to avert a potential strike. The letter, representing over 300 hundred national, state and local organizations reflects increasing concerns that a strike could occur. Adding to the concerns is an October 26thannouncement from the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) that its members have rejected the tentative agreement that was reached in September. BRS becomes the second major rail union to vote against the agreement, leading to increased uncertainty on how the labor dispute will play out. The National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC), which represents the nation’s freight railroads in national collective bargaining, issued a statement that they are disappointed in the vote result, but that status quo would be maintained until early December while parties continue negotiations. GCCA will continue to work with industry partners and policy makers urging for a resolution that avoids a work stoppage that would have significant negative impacts on the supply chain and economy.
