Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced that $5.575 billion is being made available for transportation projects that focus on strengthening supply chains, economic development, and improving safety of infrastructure across the US.  The funds come from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which passed November 2021.  Applications for projects will be funneled through the Department of Transportation, and the funds are broken down into three main parts:  $1.8 billion for the Mega program, $3.1 billion for the INFRA program, and $675 million for Rural program.  The mega program focuses on projects including highways, bridges, cargo ports, and railroads.  The INFRA program focuses on improving the efficiency, reliability, and safety of already existing critical infrastructure needed to transport freight and people.  The Rural Surface Transportation program targets infrastructure investments in rural communities.
